Bike Europe

Why?

Bike Newham

Bike Newham, Bike Europe's sister project, was inspired entirely by the excitement generated at the Swift by the Bike Europe project. The Bike Europe team will be heavily involved in organising and running the Bike Newham project utilising the skills gained from our ride through Europe.

Bike Newham is a cycling project for young people attending the Swift Youth Group. The project will enable young people to plan and take part in a range of cycling activities. A programme of weekly workshops will be run during term times from May 2007 to end of March 2008 and potentially for longer if it is a success. We will design the programme so that workshops are repeated to allow sufficient young people to take part. Repeating workshops will also allow young people who have already been trained to participate by organising and leading groups. These workshops will involve practical hands-on activities on:

  • cycle maintenance
  • safe cycling techniques
  • route planning
  • map reading
  • first aid
  • expedition planning
  • camp craft
  • nutrition for performance activities
  • training and stretching regimes

The workshops will equip the young people to organise and take part in a programme of cycling activities that will include regular weekend training rides and at least 3 two day camping/cycling expeditions. Six young people will take part in each expedition. The cycle maintenance workshops will use second hand bikes acquired free from the Wombles recycling project. Young people who own bikes will also be able to maintain these at the workshops. Expeditions will use road bikes equipped with computers and bottle cages.

The Bike Europe team members will be heavily involved in organising and leading the Bike Newham project. If you would like to know more about this project please let us know, or even better if you would like to get involved in any activites, perhaps you are a bike mechanic and would like to help, please get in touch.
